Shrimp fishing on horseback was a very common practice until the middle of the 20th century all along the Belgian coast but also in Holland, Northern France and Southern England. It took place from April to the end of October. At that time, it was most often practiced with donkeys, then with mules after the First World War, and then with draught horses such as the Belgian Brabant. It has completely disappeared and is only found in Oostduinkerke, a small Flemish coastal town which has tried to keep the tradition alive with the help of associations, the tourist office and the municipality. This type of fishing is a traditional family fishery. From generation to generation, fishermen train and use horses for fishing and pass on their knowledge to their children. This type of fishing disappeared because it did not bring in enough money and the young people did not want to take over. In 2013 there were only 12 families left practising this fishery. However, every year the whole community shares its tradition with its people and tourists during the Shrimp Festival, which has existed since 1950. In 2013, UNESCO added shrimp fishing on horseback to the world list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Thanks to this notoriety, other families were added to the 12 existing ones and now there are 17. This report shows the practice of this fishing, the link of these fishermen with their horses and the sea, the taste of simple things, the sharing of their tradition and the desire that this traditional fishing, recognized as world heritage, lasts in time.
