Lamiya Aji Bashar, 18-year-old Yazidi woman who was prisoner as a sex slave by Islamic State (ISIS) militants beaten and raped, she and two other Yazidi girls escaping with her neared Kurdish front lines in northern Iraq, one of them stepped on a land mine.The explosion killed the other two, whom Bashar only knew as 20-year-old Katherine and 8-year-old Almas. Bashar lost her right eye in the blast, her face was left covered in scars and her damaged left eye needs treatment to save what's left of her sight. receiving the European Union's Sakharov Prize for human rights from the hands of European Parliament in Strasbourg, eastern France, Two Yazidi women who escaped sexual enslavement by the Islamic State group and went on to become advocates for others have won the European Union's Sakharov Prize for human rights.
