The Kars gate are the largest and highest surviving towers in the walls - the rooms within them are particularly complex and this fortified gate is almost a castle in itself. An arch spanned between the towers and over the entrance way, allowing defenders to fire directly down at an enemy trying to break open the doors. Beyond the Kars Gate is a stretch of powerful and very impressive walls. The ramparts at this point begin to turn southward along the plateau, and the defenders must have considered Ani to be particularly vunerable to attack at this location. the empty, crumbling site of the once-great metropolis of Ani, known as "the city of a thousand and one churches." Founded more than 1,600 years ago, Ani was situated on several trade routes, and grew to become a walled city of more than 100,000 residents by the 11th century. In the centuries that followed, Ani and the surrounding region were conquered hundreds of times. Ani. Turkey. 28/06/2016
