Dome and Minaret, Zeyrek Mosque, Monastery of theÊPantocratorÊ is a significantÊmosqueÊinÊIstanbul, made of two formerÊEastern OrthodoxÊchurches and aÊchapel. It represents the most typical example ofÊarchitecture of the Byzantine middle periodÊinÊConstantinopleÊand is, afterÊHagia Sophia, the second largest religious edifice built by theÊByzantinesÊstill standing in Istanbul. Between 1118 and 1124ÊByzantineÊEmpressÊIrene of HungaryÊbuilt aÊmonasteryÊon this site dedicated toÊChrist PantokratorÊ("Christ Almighty"). The monastery consisted of a mainÊchurchÊ(which became theÊkatholikon, or main church, of the monastery) also dedicated to Christ Pantocrator, a library and a hospital. Shortly after theÊFall of ConstantinopleÊthe building was converted into a mosque, and the monastery was converted for a while into aÊMedrese. TheÊOttomansÊnamed it afterÊMolla Zeyrek, a scholar who was teaching there.Ê After the completion of the Medreses in theÊFatih complexÊin 1471, the students abandoned Zeyrek,Êand the rooms of the monastery occupied by the Medrese vanished later. Today Zeyrek Mosque is afterÊHagia Sophia the second largest extant religious edifice built by the Byzantines in Istanbul. the south and the north church are both crossÊdomedÊwith polygonalÊapsesÊhaving seven sides, and not five as was typical in the Byzantine architecture of the previous century. The apses have also tripleÊlancet windowsÊflanked byÊniches..Turkey, July 26, 2020.
