Mass prayer lead by Mohammad Mousavi Khoeiniha. Militant Islamic revolutionaries stormed the U.S embassy in Tehran and took 66 Americans hostage, demanding that the U.S extradite the former Shah of Iran who was being treated in America for cancer. The standoff lasted for 14 months following President Carter's refusal to comply. The Shah died in July 1980, but the hostages were not released until Ronald Reagan officially became president on January 20th, 1981. Tehran, IRAN - 1979.
