Iranian Protesters at the U.S. embassy in Tehran. Ayatollah Khomeini, the leader of the revolution, identified the U.S. as an "enemy of Islam". Anti-americanism escalated when the former Shah went to the U.S. for cancer treatment in 1979. On November 4, thousands of young Iranians swarmed the U.S. embassy in Tehran, taking 66 Americans hostage. A 14-month standoff followed that humbled President Carter. The Shah died in July 1980, but the hostages were not released until Ronald Reagan officially Reagan became president. Tehran, Iran-1979
