PANAREA ISLAND (SICILY), MEDITERRANEAN SEA - SEPTEMBER 2018 : An underwater eruption of gas releasing primitive bacteria on September 8, 2018, in the Aeolian islands archipelago, Mediterranean Sea. The Aeolian islands are characterized by an intense hydrothermal activity. Such underwater gas emissions from the sea floor can reach flows of thousands of cubic meters per minute. The white patches observed reveal the presence of primitive bacteria, particularly resistant to extreme and variable physicochemical conditions. (Photo by Alexis Rosenfeld/Getty Images)
