MANGAREVA ISLAND (FRENCH POLYNESIA), PACIFIC OCEAN - JANUARY 2023 : View of a black pearl farming industry in the lagoon of Mangareva island on January 21, 2023, in the Gambier archipelago, Pacific Ocean. Cultivating pearl oysters in a lengthy process, taking between 3 to 4 years to complete. The selected oysters are left in the water for 18 to 24 months. Then, once grafted, they are placed in the lagoon’s waters before harvesting. The waiting period favors the growth of the Tahitian cultured pearl, but it is impossible to know in advance if the resulting pearls will be round, pear-shaped, button, ringed, or simply unmarketable.
