MANGAREVA ISLAND (FRENCH POLYNESIA), PACIFIC OCEAN - JANUARY 2023 : View of a culture of black-lip pearl oysters (Pinctada margaritifera) in the lagoon of Mangareva island on January 21, 2023, in the Gambier archipelago, Pacific Ocean. Tahitian cultured pearls are produced by grafting black-lip pearl oysters (Pinctada margaritifera). To obtain a pearl, the grafter inserts a round sphere formed from oyster shells as a nucleus. Then, he adds a graft, which is a small piece of flesh from the mantle of a donor oyster, selected for the bright colors of its shell. It is this graft that will give to the pearl its natural color, which can be blue, green, pink, golden or silver. (Photo by Alexis Rosenfeld/Getty Images)
