PANAREA ISLAND (SICILY), MEDITERRANEAN SEA – SEPTEMBER 2018 : Thomas Grab is studying the gas eruptions under the Panarea volcanic island on September 8, 2018, in the Aeolian islands archipelago, Mediterranean Sea. Biologist Thomas Grab, Research Assistant at the University of Freiberg, measures the temperature of this “grey smoker”. The thermometer reads over 129 degrees Celsius. However, when diving, the water does not boil under pressure. The conditions of this particularly hostile ecosystem are being studied by this team of researchers, as life is nevertheless thriving there. (Photo by Alexis Rosenfeld/Getty Images)
