PANAREA ISLAND (SICILY), MEDITERRANEAN SEA – SEPTEMBER 2018 : Observation of the basaltic organs of the Panarea volcanic island on September 8, 2018, in the Aeolian islands archipelago, Mediterranean Sea. More than 80 meters beneath the island of Panarea, we observed these smokers, also known as hydrothermal vents. They are found at important depths, in volcanically active environments. The water emerging released from these smokers contains high levels of sulfur, enabling the growth of primitive bacteria. (Photo by Alexis Rosenfeld/Getty Images)
