PELAGOS SANCTUARY (FRANCE), MEDITERRANEAN SEA - AUGUST 2020 : A group of long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas) is spotted from the surface on August 15, 2020, in the French part of the Pelagos Sanctuary, Mediterranean Sea. The particularly complex social behavior of cetaceans, as well as their learning abilities and their large brain size, suggest the existence of significant cognitive abilities among these animals. The long-finned pilot whale is not an exception. A recent study even suggests that it possesses almost twice as many neocortical neurons as humans.
