PELAGOS SANCTUARY (FRANCE), MEDITERRANEAN SEA - AUGUST 2020 : Observation of a long-finned pilot whale (Globicephala melas) calf close to its mother on August 15, 2020, in the French part of the Pelagos Sanctuary, Mediterranean Sea. The mammary glands of the female long-finned pilot whale are not external but are hidden in two small slits located on either side of the genital area. Cetaceans do not show muscles to suckle. It is the mother who ejects milk after receiving a pressure on the belly from the calf. This milk is much fatter than the one of land mammals, enabling a fast growth.
