PELAGOS SANCTUARY (FRANCE), MEDITERRANEAN SEA - AUGUST 2020 : Observation of a group of long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas) socializing on August 15, 2020, in the French part of the Pelagos Sanctuary, Mediterranean Sea. Long-finned pilot whale groups have a highly varied vocal repertoire. Echolocation clicks are emitted when foraging, while whistles and burst pulses are social signals. The whistles of adult long-finned pilot whales are emitted at frequencies between 1 and 8 kHz, with an average duration of around 1 second. Sounds emitted by calves are generally characterized by low frequencies. (Photo by Alexis Rosenfeld/Getty Images)
