PELAGOS SANCTUARY (FRANCE), MEDITERRANEAN SEA - AUGUST 2020 : Observation of a long-finned pilot whale (Globicephala melas) calf in the middle of its group on August 15, 2020, in the French part of the Pelagos Sanctuary, Mediterranean Sea. The gestation period for long-finned pilot whales is between 14 and 16 months. Newborns measure around 180 cm at birth and are breast-fed for 12 to 18 months. Due to the high level of maternal care, only one calf per mother is born every 3 to 5 years. Around 10 calves can be counted in the life of a female, whose lifespan is estimated at 60 to 70 years.
