Jacques-Yves Cousteau, French diver

^BJacques-Yves Cousteau^b (1910-1997), French diver, explorer and researcher, being welcomed by singing schoolchildren in Madagascar. Cousteau is there as part of the 1994 exploration of Madagascar by the Cousteau Society's research ship ^IAlcyone^i. This was one of Cousteau's last expeditions. This is the village of Manantenasoa. Cousteau spent his life exploring and studying the sea. He is famous as the co-inventor of the aqualung (1943), underwater breathing equipment used in scuba diving. Other areas of underwater technology that he developed included diving masks, underwater cameras and two small manned submarines. He won many awards for his books and documentaries about the sea.
